I want to talk about the lug lock key, or a wheel lock key.
You may see these in your car, probably in a pouch like this, and wonder what they are, why they are there, and why do you need them.
DO NOT THROW THEM OUT AND DO NOT LOSE THEM!
This is a specially designed key that is used to remove a vehicle’s lug lock. Your tires are locked on which prevents them from being stolen.
Lug locks are lug nuts that have a unique pattern.
Like fingerprints, the lug locks for your car are one of a kind, and only this key can remove them.
The good thing about this is that it prevents thieves from being able to steal your tires or rims.
Additionally, many insurance companies offer discounts to vehicle owners who use wheel locks because they are seen as a deterrent to theft.
The bad thing is that if you lose this, it’s a real pain.
What Happens if I Lose this Key?
Without the key, it can be difficult or even impossible to remove the wheel locks, which means that you may need to have the locks drilled out, and then you will have to purchase a new set of wheel locks/lug nuts.
This can be time-consuming and expensive.
So let me repeat, don’t lose your wheel lock key!
The lug lock key is needed every time you get your tires rotated, your brakes done, or you need to change your tire. You need this key every time your tires need to be removed.
It’s important to keep it in a safe place.
You can store it in the glove compartment or center console of your car or truck.
You can put it in your trunk with your spare tire, or in the pocket on the back of your seat if you have one.
Anywhere it is easily accessible but also out of sight.
Pick a spot in your car, always keep it in the spot, and remember where it is.
