Mominar 043: How To Write a Good Resume

Whether it is your first job or you have been working for a while, its a good idea to create a resume.

A resume is a document you make to present your education, work history, skills and accomplishments to potential employers. It’s like a highlight reel of your strengths.

These days, you often apply for jobs online but you still want to have a resume on a word doc so you can upload it to a job portal.

Why make a resume? Because it is your first impression. It is a snapshot of your skills and qualities.

There are tons of free templates to help guide you. Which template you use is purely a personal choice or you can make one yourself on Canva or  a word doc.  But what you want it to be is SUCCINCT.

That means concise and clear.  You don’t want it to be too wordy or look like you are trying to impress with long, awkward descriptions. We see right through that.

Make sure it is well written, good spelling, grammar, and punctuation. PROOFREAD IT! And then have someone else proofread it.

Your resume is an opportunity for you to stand out from the crowd. So promote yourself, build yourself up, toot your own horn, but Be Honest!

Don’t exaggerate and don’t lie! If this is your first job, it’s your first job. It’s okay if it seems thin. Highlight your personal strengths.

Today, the resume is not always the main thing an employer will look at. Your “searchability” is. You will be googled so search yourself first and make sure there isn’t anything outdated or that could derail a potential job. And clean up your social media. Check out the last mominar on how social media can potentially ruin your reputation.

If you already are in the workforce, you will most definitely want to make a LinkedIn profile. You can consider making one even if you are brand new. You can always add to it, and it is a good way to make a solid professional presence.

I have hired many people in my day and for me, authenticity is most important. A lot of applicants would be unnecessarily pompous and try to look over-impressive on their resumes.  It was the wording that was fake. Be confident in what you bring to the table, but try to use your own voice. Let your true self shine through!
