Mominar 066: How To Deposit Checks and Cash into Your Bank Account

How To Deposit Checks and Cash into Your Bank Account

I did a Mominar about how to use your debit card to buy things a while back. Since then I have been asked about how to put money on your debit card so you can buy those things that you want.

Firstly, your debit card is an extension of your bank account.

And there has to be cash in your account to use your debit card.

So, Ultimately, you will have to deposit checks and cash into your bank account in order to use your debit card, and here are the ways you can do it.

Using The ATM

There will be some sort of indication of where to put your card.

You can either insert it into the machine or you can tap it using the chip on the front of your card.

In order to deposit checks and cash into your bank account, follow the instructions on the screen.

You will be asked for your Pin number which you set up when you opened your account. you’re going to type that in (either on the keypad or on the touchscreen) and press OK. A menu will come up with lots of options.

Hit deposit.

The machine will show you how to put the check or money into it.

Whether you are depositing checks or cash into your bank account, you must follow the instructions on the screen.

Depositing Cash

If you are depositing cash, make sure that you straighten out the bills as much as possible.

Smooth out bent edges, and make them as crisp as possible.

It is just like a change machine in an arcade or laundromat.

Sometimes the machine won’t accept the bills and it’ll spit them back out, so make sure that the bills are straight as possible.

Make sure that you count your money and know the amount you are depositing!

The machine is going to count it but sometimes the machine makes mistakes so make sure you know exactly how much cash you’re putting in.

You will see a light and a door will open, and you will insert the money as indicated.

The machine is then going to scan the bills.

It will then show you what denominations you have.

Make sure the machine got it right and then hit Confirm Total

Afterward, you will be offered a selection of choices.

You can print a receipt, text it, email it, or chooses no receipt.

Going Into The Bank

You can also deposit checks and cash into your bank account by walking into the bank and having a teller help you.

The teller will call you forward when it’s your turn.

You’ll need your account number. You’ll still need your debit card or an ID so they can verify you are the account owner.

Since this is your bank, you will be asked to insert or tap your card so that the teller can get your information.

Enter your pin number and the teller will take it from there.

For checks: You will endorse the check which means sign it.

Hand the check and/or the cash to the teller.

The teller will process the transaction and the amount will show up on the screen.

If it’s correct, confirm it, and then select if you want a receipt or no receipt. That’s it!

Mobile Banking

Another way to deposit money it’s through your online app with mobile banking.

This is my favorite.

But it is for CHECKS ONLY

You will just open your mobile app on your phone and you will select DEPOSIT.

You’re gonna type in the amount you want to deposit.

It will ask you to take a picture of the front of the check.

You will see on your phone a window that you should align with the check.

Once lined up, the app will automatically take the picture for you.

If it doesn’t work, you could also do a manual capture.

A confirmation of the amount will come up with a picture of the front of the check that you just took.

The app will move on and ask you to take a picture of the back of the check.

There will be instructions.

Instructions For The Back of the Check

First, you will sign the back of the check.

Then you will need to write something like: For Mobile Deposit At (YOUR BANK) Only.

Line up the check for the photo and again the image of the back of the check will come up. You’re going to confirm the total and then you’re going to hit DEPOSIT.

Once it’s done you’ll get, a confirmation that the check was received.

Sometimes on the back of the check, there is a box that you can check and put a date on; that’s an indication to yourself that you’ve already deposited this check.

IMPORTANT Steps To Take After You Deposit a Check

Once the check has been deposited, you can save it for your records or destroy it.

Just make sure you record it somewhere so that you know what it was for.

Check your account the next day to make sure the bank got your deposited check.

There is usually a waiting period for a check to clear.

So don’t think you have the exact amount of any check available for immediate use. It takes a few days for a check to “clear”.
